We caught up with him to find out more about the service…
How long have you worked at Windrush?
I started here at the tail end of May, so around five months now.
What does your job entail?
I’m the Prestige Transport Driver. That means I’m responsible for transporting clients’ cars safely and reliably from A to B. It doesn’t matter what the car is – I’ve moved everything from Bentleys to Lamborghinis, McClarens to Ford Capris – they are all looked after equally and treated exactly the same.
How do you do this?
I do everything I can to make sure the client’s car arrives in the condition it came to us in. We’re dealing with some very high end cars and I don’t want them to move a millimetre when they’re in the trailer! When each car is loaded every wheel has a securing strap over the top of the tyre, chocks on the rear and they’re put into gear with the handbrake on – there’s no way these cars are going to move!
It also helps that we have an all singing, all dancing, top of the range, fully enclosed vehicle transport trailer at Windrush. This was custom-made for us in Germany – it’s got self-levelling air suspension, so it knows just where the car needs to sit for transporting for the perfect balance and cushioned ride. As it’s fully enclosed, the car is protected from adverse weather and there is complete privacy of what is onboard.
Tell us more about the Windrush Car Transport Service?
The Windrush Car Transport Service is something we offer exclusively to our clients. If clients need their cars moving from one location to another, that’s what we do. It doesn’t matter where – the cars could be stored at Windrush Car Storage in the Cotswolds and clients wish to take their car out in London, or vice versa, or they might wish their classic car be taken to the Goodwood Revival – whatever the client wish is – the answer is always yes.
Why do clients choose Windrush Car Transport Services?
We are reliable and dependable. Nothing is rushed, nothing is too much trouble. We place a great emphasis on security. As well as all the safety procedures to prevent the cars moving, we have cameras inside the trailer so I can see from my dashboard if anything has moved. I also have a camera behind the trailer so I can watch who’s following me or see who’s stopped behind me at traffic lights and junctions.
What's your favourite thing about working at Windrush?
Coming from the outside and looking in, it’s just brilliant how it all works here. The service Windrush offers is amazing. Clients are not just paying to store their cars, it’s all the other things – the cars are on constant trickle charge, exercised regularly, put to bed, and we even take them for their MOTs – what more could a client want?
What did you do prior to working at Windrush?
I worked carrying out roadside recovery, dealing with all manner of cars and clients needing urgent assistance; nothing was ever too much trouble.
What do you like to do when you're not working?
I enjoy motorsport and have my own track car that I prepare and race at weekends, transporting to and from the event – you could say I rather like car transport! When not racing myself I enjoy heading out in my motorhome to watch races around the country. I’m also a hands-on dad, and love nothing more than tinkering around at home with cars and motorbikes.
Favourite work memory?
This isn’t a job, it’s a way of life! I get to drive some incredible cars and such a range – I picked up a client’s 1929 Bentley the other day, I took a Bugatti Veyron for a photoshoot, I transported a classic Porsche for its MOT and I’m collecting a client’s Ford Capri which has been in their family from new to bring it back to Windrush Car Storage in the Cotswolds. The other thing I love, apart from the cars themselves, is meeting the clients – the trust and appreciation for what we carry out is incredibly rewarding.
Tell us about your car history?
What was your first car?
It was a little classic Mini 1275 GT clubman – but this was no standard Mini. It was built for hill climbing with a 1380CC engine – I had loads of fun in that!
Current car?
Daily is a Corsa VXR, weekends is a mini, motorhome and track car.
What is your dream car?
We really are spoiled for choice and it probably changes from week to week. We often have similar ‘top ten’ car garage chats in the Windrush tea room. Currently I am dreaming of Lamborghinis, next week it will probably be a Bentley!
