For many of our clients, a car is not simply a possession – it is a considered acquisition, often representing years of searching, significant investment, and genuine attachment. When life requires a move back to the UK, leaving it behind is rarely an option.

Windrush regularly arranges the repatriation of client vehicles from across the world – the United States, Europe, Hong Kong, and increasingly the Middle East. With a notable number of British expats now returning from the UAE, particularly Dubai and Abu Dhabi, we coordinate international vehicle shipping to the UK with growing frequency. If you are planning a return and considering how to bring your car with you, this is what the process looks like in practice.

What International car shipping to the UK involves

Shipping a premium or collector vehicle internationally is not inherently complex, but it requires precise coordination. Documentation must be accurate, the shipping method must suit the vehicle, and the receiving process must be properly managed.  Any misstep introduces unnecessary risk to a vehicle that warrants none.  For premium vehicles, the preferred method is typically container shipping – either shared (groupage) or dedicated. This ensures the car travels enclosed, protected from both the elements and external contact. For particularly valuable or sensitive vehicles, a sole-use container is the appropriate choice. While roll-on roll-off (RoRo) shipping is available at a lower cost, we do not recommend it for collector cars.

From Dubai or Abu Dhabi, sea freight to the UK generally takes around four weeks. This includes collection, transport to port, the sea voyage, UK clearance, and onward delivery. It is a well-established and reliable route when handled correctly.

How Windrush manages the process

Our role is to remove the complexity entirely. We handle the required shipping documentation on your behalf and coordinate directly with specialist freight partners to ensure the vehicle is collected, transported, and routed correctly.  You have a single point of contact throughout. There is no need to liaise with freight operators or navigate unfamiliar processes – we manage everything as part of your vehicle’s ongoing care.

Upon arrival in the UK, your car is received directly into Windrush storage. It is inspected, all observations are documented and reported to you, before being prepared and stored to our usual standards – climate-controlled, maintained, and ready for use when required.

Why this matters for clients returning from the Middle East

Dubai Middle East expats

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have long attracted British professionals – and their cars. Favourable taxation, available space, and a driving culture suited to performance and collector vehicles means many clients have acquired significant cars during their time there, or exported vehicles that now need to return. Repatriating a car from the UAE involves both UAE export procedures and UK import requirements. Depending on specification, vehicles may also require inspection or modification to meet UK standards (in particular if being registered in the UK). These are entirely manageable steps, but not ones best left to chance – particularly with an unfamiliar or high-value vehicle.

Having a concierge partner who understands the process, and takes responsibility for managing it properly, makes a material difference.

Arriving home to a car that Is ready

Collector car condition monitoring and documentation

One of the less obvious advantages of routing your vehicle through Windrush is that the transition from shipping container to storage to road is handled as a single, seamless process.  Your car is not simply delivered and left. It arrives, is inspected, is prepared if required, and is ready when you are.  For clients returning from the Gulf and re-establishing life in the UK, this takes care of one significant element.

A full car concierge service

International shipping is one of the more logistically involved services we provide – but it is only one part of a broader concierge relationship that extends well beyond the moment a car arrives.  Once your vehicle is with us, that relationship continues: maintenance, MOT and servicing coordination, detailing, battery care, tyre management, collection and delivery. The full scope of proper vehicle care, handled through a single, trusted point of contact.  Whether coordinating a shipment from Dubai or preparing a car for a weekend drive, the same level of attention applies.

For those returning to the UK after time abroad, it is worth understanding that bringing your car home is not where the service ends. In many cases, it is where it begins. Please get in touch if we can help with the international shipping and care of your car.
